The massif

The most spectacular on the island

The Bavella Needles form a line of red granite peaks rising to 1,855 metres at Punta Alta. You reach them by the Bavella pass (1,218 m), at the end of a mountain road winding up from Zonza — an hour from the villa, and a complete change of world: you leave the maquis and the beaches for laricio pine forest and mountain air.

The pass itself is a viewpoint: the Virgin of Bavella, a few inns serving Alta Rocca charcuterie and cheese, and the start of several trails. The GR20 passes through here, which gives the place its particular mountain-refuge feel.

Three walks from the pass

  • The Trou de la Bombe (U Cumpuleddu) — 2 h there and back, moderate climb, orange waymarks. An eight-metre natural arch pierced through the rock, with a dizzying view over the cirque.
  • The GR20 alpine variant — 4 to 5 h, for experienced walkers only: cabled sections, exposure. Spectacular but technical.
  • The shepherds' path — a 3 h loop on the classic GR20, through the pine wood and the sheepfolds.

The natural pools

Purcaraccia and the Cavu pools

At the foot of the massif, the mountain streams have carved clear-water pools into the granite — the area's other great draw, and a welcome alternative to the beaches at the height of August.

  • Purcaraccia waterfalls — natural slides and deep pools, reached by a steep 45-minute climb from the Bavella road. Also a well-known canyoning site.
  • Cavu pools — up the valley from Sainte-Lucie, only 30 minutes from the villa: a string of pools edged with granite slabs, very easy with a family.
  • Piscia di Gallo — a 70-metre waterfall in the Ospedale forest, 1 h 30 there and back.

The pools of the Cavu are the easiest outing from the villa: half a day, with no need to drive up to the pass.

Mountain precautions

The road to the pass is narrow and winding: allow an hour from the villa, and more in August. Set off early, as parking at the pass is limited.

In the mountains, take water, closed shoes and a windproof: it can be 15 °C cooler than by the sea, and heat storms are common in the late afternoon in summer. For canyoning, always go with a qualified guide: flash floods are sudden and several accidents happen at these sites every summer.

Frequently asked questions

Bavella in practice

How long does it take to reach Bavella from the villa?
Allow about 1 hour for the 50 km between the villa and the Bavella pass, via Sainte-Lucie, Zonza and the mountain road. Allow longer in peak season.
Is the Trou de la Bombe walk suitable for families?
Yes, the Trou de la Bombe takes 2 hours there and back with a moderate climb, fine from the age of 8-10 in proper shoes. The final stretch is exposed: hold children's hands near the drop.
Where can you swim in a river near the villa?
The natural pools of the Cavu, 30 minutes from the villa, are the easiest to reach. The Purcaraccia waterfalls, more spectacular, require a steep 45-minute climb.
When is the best season for Bavella?
From May to October. May and June for the cool air and the full streams, September and October for the colours and the quiet. The pass can be under snow from December to March.
